Geek alert: Site Updates

Posted by: Jamie AKA Pesky

From time to time I’m going to post something geeky. I can’t help it, it’s in my nature.

I’ve spent the last couple of days taking suggestions from lots of different directions, including myself, and applying them to the site. These include:

  • Completely revised design and colouring scheme aimed at better usability, expansion and easier reading.
  • A new gallery system - after much trial and error I’ve ended up using the absolutely fantastic zenphoto.
  • ZenShow wordpress plugin - This is a great little plugin that integrates zenphoto with wordpress. It required some tweaking but its now working flawlessly.
  • Java uploader for multiple photos - to enable us to upload as many photos as possible, I’ve built a small script which utilises Jupload to resize photos locally and then upload them to the gallery. I’m using an old version of Jupload which I’d used on a previous project as it has a much smaller footprint.
  • Favicon - Just to add that extra bit of finishing to the site.
  • GeoPress - This is one of the first things that I added and it provides great location support for posts, allowing us to type the city we’re in and it automatically inserts a map. Currently, it is set to use Yahoo maps which are great. I do actually prefer Google, however, their road maps have very little coverage in asia and especially China (surprise surprise). I’m still looking for a way to disable the wheel mouse zoom on these maps as it keeps catching me out!
  • New countdown - I removed the tacky javascript countdown, and replaced it with the much more manageable countdown-timer plugin by Andrew Ferguson.

I’m sure there are more things that I have changed/added but they’ve most probably got swept in with the new design.

Geek moment over!

As you may also have seen, I’ve now upgraded the comments section to include Gravatars (those little images next to each person’s post). To get your own gravatar, which will work for all blogs that support them, go to www.gravatar.com or click on any of the icons.
